Just 9 games have been played of the new Premier League season, but there's a lot of panic exuding from a number of FPL managers. I think it's important to acknowledge that the first gameweek of the season is a time to watch teams closely and attempt to understand what individual players may bring to your squad. Making decisions based solely on a matter of a few points here for a goal, or there for an assist, doesn't always pay off so early on. There are a number of reasons why the panic should be kept to a minimum and the analysis of fantasy football squads should be undertaken in a logical and relaxed manner.
First, remember why you chose the squad in the first place. Are there points on your bench? If so, then that's unfortunate, but the points are clearly not too far away. Did you select players such as Harry Kane and Andros Townsend for gameweek one only, or because they have great upcoming fixtures? Take a moment before you decide on the future of your players.
Second, this is the beginning of the bandwagoners. These are usually inexperienced FPL managers who are unable to look past the game they just watched. It is fair to say that there are some bandwagons that are sensible to jump on as the season goes on, but picking Phillipe Coutinho ahead of Roberto Firmino on the basis of one game, for example, appears a little short-sighted. Firmino plays in a more attacking role than Coutinho and scored more goals and assists in fewer minutes last season. Liverpool also have some tricky fixtures coming up – do you really want to rush into a transfer like that?
Third, the first gameweek of the season entails a lot of luck. You might have selected Eriksen or Alli instead of Lamela. Perhaps you picked Tadic or Long instead of Redmond. Points will change hands as the weeks go by. Trust yourself – there's a reason you picked the players you did.
I hope you're all having a good first gameweek of the season.
